4 New Barges for Canada's Arctic

MTS, the government run shipping company that services the MacKenzie River and Canada's Arctic coast, has acquired 4 new double hull barges. The barges were built in China and delivered to the NWT on August 31.

Cabin Radio has reported the story here:

Currently, because until now there had only been single hull barges in MTS' fleet, section 5.2.2.4 of the Standards for the Construction, Inspection, and Operation of Barges Carrying Oil or Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk included an exemption from the normal requirement for double hulls.

Given the recent acquisition by MTS, I anticipate Transport Canada will remove or curtail that exemption.
